Why does Fujimoto Tatsuki draw?
Просмотров 27 тыс.2 месяца назад
! SPOILERS FOR ALL OF LOOK BACK ! Look Back by Fujimoto is probably my favourite work of his - and it begs the question "Why do you draw?". So today I've done a little video that is perhaps just as personal to me, as this manga is to Fujimoto. If you're an artist, or a creative in general who makes or produces stuff, let me know your answer to that question to. Why do YOU draw? And is it a clos...

Land of the Lustrous was a manga that hit like a ton of bricks. After having watched the very first episode back in 2017, I instantly ordered all the available manga to read the following day. Delicious in Dungeon - Fundamentals of Character Design

Delicious in Dungeon (otherwise known as Dungeon Meshi) is my favourite manga. Of all time. There's a reason the series was the first piece of media you saw on the channel, and it's because i'm so in love with the world Ryoko Kui has created. Character design has been talked about among the manga community. But i've never felt it's really delved into the how and why's of what makes character de...

Begging for people without braincells to see animation for the magic it is. It's not a genre. It's not made specifically for kids. I started crying when I saw the panel which said "Writing off the thing you love as just a hobby sounds like something only grown-ups would do..." Made me realize this is exactly what I was doing when I chose my university and major despite being an arts student my whole life. When I moved to academics I performed will but I lost all my artistic expression over the following years. It's very sad to look back on now and I encourage my own students to follow their passions as far as they can.

Actually what you call “realism” is naturalism. Realistic art can be abstract in fact there is a lot of it, it just means that the art piece represents a subject matter truthfully, if you want examples google Otto Dix. Yeah I learned a bunch of stupid shit in school I’m never gonna use anywhere, might as well educate the comment section.

As a bigger gal this series not only story wise, but character design, makes me so happy. I see myself in a lot of the dwarf characters being smaller but wider and it truly lets people feel more connected to the characters. I completely understand how senshi looses energy faster but is still a heavy hitter when fighting. We need more media like this everywhere and is overall a more creative venue that should be considered more. I love you Dungeon Meshi❤

I've only watched the anime, but did notice how identifiable the characters were after the mushroom circle. I'd say the only one who I wouldn't be able to spot immediately would be Senshi, and that's largely because his gesture as well as his proportions changed. Laios, Chilchum, and Marcille were immediately identifiable. I also mentioned to my spouse how interesting it was that Falin, while full in the bust, was tall and not really curvy or very thin, but with a strong, straight silhouette that makes her look much more like her brother than like the slim, delicate Marcille.

not a manga, bcs it's from the US, but tillie walden does something similar in her graphic novel "are you listening?". walden isn't as extragant as shirahama hahaha, but she deforms the panels specifically to show the strong feelings and struggles the protagonists are having, such as confusion, despair, anger and panels come back to normal once the crisis is overcome. it's very minimalistic, but it also catches the attraction because of that. she also plays a lot with negative space: in a panel, the darkness is from the sky, and in the next one, the same darkness are mountains, or a forest, or the mind of the characters. in summary i can say it's a little bit of conservative but it serves a purpose and it works. oh and, hi, love your content 😂🎉

I've just realised how glad I am that I watched it while it was airing. I so vividly remember waking up to a new episode every Wednesday (I'm russian) in my teenage bedroom. Our whole (russian speaking) community was so involved that people were subtitling (and promptly dubbing) episodes just as they were airing despite the timezone difference so everyone could participate in the mystery solving and theorising. It was truly a great adventure!

One of my favourite parts of dungeon meshi is how I feel like you can easily tell the personality of a character just by looking at their faces, especially the eyes. Laois and Falin have the most gentle and kind smile and eyes I’ve ever seen, it makes me wonder how people don’t become immediately enamoured by them on first contact. Falin is interesting too because when she Changes they’re suddenly open wide and it’s UNSETTLING. Chilchuck looks young as a half-foot but you can See this Cynicism in his eyes that kinda tells you that he’s much older than his small stature implies. Marcille’s are bright and wide in a way that instead of making me think of wonder and curiosity, makes me think she is Just Like Me Fr Fr and is battling demons in there. Senshi’s are just SCREAMING “silly man :)”, his eyes are so cartoonishly round. Izutsumi’s are sharp and a bright, unnatural yellow that make you immediately think “CAT. MEAN CAT GIRL”. Kabru is a BEAUTIFUL subversion on the trope of blue eyes representing a good heart, because I mean I’m not actually saying Kabru doesn’t have that, he’s clearly a very selfless person who cares a lot about the greater good, it’s like, his whole thing, but holy SHIT those things are mad of ICE. They’re cold and captivating and a little uncanny but blue eyes are blue eyes so most people don’t find him creepy, they find him charismatic. Anyways I just. I just rlly like Dungeon Meshi character design. Oh god and I haven’t even gotten into SHAPE LANGUAGE.

Not gonna lie, the last paragraph made me tear up a little. And it's one of the reasons I really like Delicious in Dungeon too - it's fantasy, but done in such a way that it could be very real. Little note, though - Kingmaker is not a sequel to WOTR, though they're a series. Another big inspiration, partly covered by D&D mentioned, is Baldur's Gate series - as shown by portraits done by Ryoko Kui. I'm not aware of other any other western RPGs inspirations, though I'm very surprised that the author is aware of Pathfinder/BG as they don't seem to be that popular in the east. Dungeon crawlers on the other hand like Wizardry series absolutely exploded in Japan one time and the biggest fanbase of that series probably lives there.

This video is beautiful. It puts in to words so many things that I appreciate about dungeon meshi and beautifully articulates what sets it apart from other manga. It is truely special piece of art that is upheld by its attention to detail. Nothing feels out of place or like it is trying to fit some agenda, it all just makes sense and to me, it defines perfect world building. Ryoko Kui is a genius and I’m so glad that studio trigger were able to bring the characters and world to life. I watched the anime and have never been more inspired to retroactively read a manga. Comparing the written work to the animation, it is clear that so much love and attention were given to perfecting the execution. Dungeon Meshi is perhaps my favourite piece of media.

oh i assure you, senshi and the orcs are supposed to be sexy. the entire manga is lowkey horny at all times but you gotta be a special higher-level pervert to appreciate it, like a fine brandy. the story is fundamentally about honoring bodily needs and urges without stigmatizing any of it, and that incudes sex just as much as it does, say, eating a meal heavy in fat and salt. the fact that it manages to do this in a way that doesn't objectify or disrespect anyone is a masterclass on storytelling, and every single author in the market had better be taking notes. you can in fact have a character be sexy without making it feel forced or crude, and those characters don't need to conform to modern beauty standards to be desirable. mind you, senshi is pretty much universally acknowledged to be hot. the monsterfucker crowd stayed for the orc lady and the kobolds though
